FIRST CLASS
What kind of traveler are you? Do you know? These were the questions I posed on my Instagram page earlier this week. I thought I knew exactly the kind of traveler I was but it wasn’t until many trips later that it all came together for me.
What makes you a certain kind of traveler? Can you only be one kind? I mean I know what I like and dislike but does that limit me to being under the umbrella of a certain kind of traveler? What if I require 5 star accommodations for one trip but on the next trip pitch a tent?
I say you don’t have to confine yourself to being just one kind of traveler. You can do it all…be all! …but as for me and my house, we will live in the lap of luxury, hahaha…jk. No but for real, I learned at a very young age that I’m adaptable and over the years it’s become an art form, a talent if you must. My first trip out of the country was to Africa, Lagos Nigeria to be exact. I was 11. It was there aboard my British airways flight to London that I found out what luxury travel looked like and I must confess it has scarred me forever, lol.
Like I said, I was 11 and this was my first time on a flight. Back then there weren’t direct flights to Nigeria like there are now. Our flight itinerary was Chicago➡️London-➡️Lagos. The cabins aboard British Airways flights were broken up into 3 travel classes, Economy-Business-First. Now, there are 4 different classes, Premium Economy have been added to their lineup.
Ok, so back to how I found out what luxury looked liked, lol. So I was in economy, duh, lol. Of course my first time flying was not going to be in first class, like who do I think I am? 😄
Anyway, It was late, the plane was quiet, most of the people were sleeping. I got up to go to the bathroom but both the economy and business class bathrooms were occupied. I really had to use the bathroom so I proceeded to the next cabin unaware of any rules but it was weird because I do remember hesitating before I pulled the curtain back revealing first class. It was like I knew, even at that age and it being my first time on the plane that this area was off limits but being the curious 11 yr old I was I pulled it back.
An air hostess quickly came up to me. I told her I needed to use the bathroom and explained all the others were full. She walked me to the bathroom door in first class but this one was also occupied. She then asked me if I wanted to wait and I said yes, so she took me to an empty seat in first class and said I could wait there. Y’all, it was then, at that moment that I saw how I wanted to travel, lol. It was beautiful, my eyes got so big trying to take it all in 😄. I thought to myself, this must cost a fortune.
Finally, I got to use the bathroom. Once I exited the air hostess was waiting with a smile and a snack in her hand for me. This was my very first, first class experience on my very first flight.
Do you remember your first travel experience or have a travel story? I’d love to hear. ❤
Until next time. Later readers. 😊
